Whatever It Takes™
Because no field of psychiatry delivers “The Answer,” I became the “Whatever It Takes” psychiatrist.
When I was first introduced to the world of psychiatry as a medical student, initially I was thrilled with the opportunities and insights it offered. I had the pleasure of taking courses that explored both the psychological and biological aspects of our consciousness… however, not long after I began my training I became disturbed by what I witnessed: The psychoanalysts vehemently disagreed with the biologically oriented psychiatrists, and the biologists held the “pseudo-science” analysts (and their focus on the power of the unconscious) in disdain. Each camp felt that they had a corner on the truth. Which field was I to choose?
It turns out…neither.
To understand the bigger picture, I strongly believed I’d need to implement elements from both biological psychiatry and psychoanalysis, joining them together rather than putting them at odds against each other, like so many of my colleagues did. And so, I set out to learn the best from both worlds, and embarked on a worldwide journey to find the big-picture truths about our minds and hearts that would help me truly heal those hurting souls who would eventually place their trust in me and my work.
At Georgetown University I trained with psychoanalysts and the founder of family systems therapy. I traveled to London to learn from some of the finest psychopharmacologists in the world, and from existential psychoanalysts. I traveled to Boston to study with nationally recognized training psychoanalysts and internationally renowned behavioral neurologists. Each expert taught me a valuable piece of the puzzle. And over the years, I blended them together to discover what it took to heal individuals and make them whole again.
Too many in my profession are constrained by the strict boundaries of their training, afraid to step outside the lines even in the service of their patient. My answer to this has always been: If we are truly intent on doing Whatever It Takes to heal those who entrust their deepest pain to us, then it is our obligation to learn, observe, and be open to every field—anything that will help us do our job more effectively, period.
Today, I am driven to meticulously identify and treat the underlying biological, psychological, and social causes of emotional distress; persistently striving to help my patients achieve a full recovery. Whatever It Takes may include innovative laboratory and genetic testing; coordination with other medical specialists and nutritionists; medication and supplements; nutrition and lifestyle management; and uncovering the unconscious and interpersonal causes of emotional pain.
And guess what…my pursuit of knowledge is never complete. I continue in a training psychoanalysis, and am learning about genetics, cell biology, and the microbiome. Why? By helping you, I help myself. I can transform my obsessive, perfectionistic, driven personality; and my troubled childhood; into an ever-improving healing instrument.

Adult Attention Deficits – The Psychiatrist as DetectiveFebruary 11, 2016
Given the risk that “Adult ADD” may become over-diagnosed, and stimulants may become over-prescribed, much in the same fashion as childhood ADD, it is important to recognize that there are many causes of disrupted attention in adults that bring about symptoms similar to adult ADD, but have differing origins and treatments. A careful diagnostic assessment is in order.Read More
